A light vehicle driver on a UAE project is the company's link between people and places. One day you take engineers to three sites, collect documents from a government office, pick up spare parts in Mussafah and bring the safety officer back before sunset. The vehicles are pickups, cars, vans and small buses, but the responsibility is real: you carry staff, company property and paperwork through some of the busiest roads in the region. This guide uses a September 2026 Abu Dhabi circular to show the pay and explains what employers expect from a light driver.
Pay on the September 2026 circular

| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Basic salary | AED 2,000 |
| Other allowance | AED 500 |
| Monthly total | AED 2,500 |
| Food | Free |
| Accommodation and transport | Provided |
| Hours | 9 a day including 1-hour break, 6 days a week |
That is about ₹57,500 a month at ₹23 to the dirham. Light motor vehicle driver jobs advertised in Indian cities in 2026 mostly paid around ₹12,000–25,000 a month, so the Abu Dhabi offer is more than double the top of that range, before counting free housing and meals.

Eligibility on this circular
The employer listed six conditions. Candidates needed between three and five years behind the wheel of cars, pickups or vans, and they had to already hold a UAE licence for light vehicles. The upper age limit was 45. Passports had to have at least a year of validity left, the medical had to be done at a centre approved for GCC visas (no other report accepted), and selected drivers were expected to fly out within roughly seven days once the visa came through. In short, this was a fast-joining job aimed at experienced drivers who were ready to go.
Why a UAE licence matters so much
You cannot drive a company car in the Emirates on a foreign licence once you are a resident. The federal UAE government licence page lists who may swap a home-country licence and who must train locally. Drivers from a short list of countries swap theirs at the counter; most South Asian drivers go through a driving school, a theory exam, a parking (yard) assessment and a road test. Abu Dhabi files are now opened with the Integrated Transport Centre, and Bayut's licence walkthrough gives an idea of the fees involved, which can run into thousands of dirhams if you need many lessons.
If you are applying from India without a UAE licence, be clear about it. Some employers hire drivers on a helper or messenger role first and pay for the licence; others only want licence holders, like this one.
What the job involves day to day
- Staff movement: engineers, supervisors and visitors between offices and sites.
- Errands: documents to typing centres and government offices, cheque deposits, courier drop-offs.
- Materials: small tools and spare parts from suppliers.
- Vehicle care: fuel, cleaning, tyre and oil checks, keeping the logbook and service record up to date.
- Waiting: many drivers spend time waiting for passengers, so patience and phone etiquette matter.

Skills that make you stand out
- Road knowledge. Know Abu Dhabi city, Mussafah, ICAD and the main highways to Dubai and Al Ain, and use map apps confidently.
- Clean record. UAE traffic cameras are everywhere, and black points can stop you driving. A record with no major fines is valuable.
- Basic English or Arabic. Enough to talk with passengers, security gates and government counters.
- Smartphone skills. Sharing live location, sending photos of delivered documents and using WhatsApp groups with the office.
- Reliability. Being on time at 5:30 am, every day, is what supervisors remember.
Hours, overtime and pay
The circular states 9 hours a day including a break. Light drivers are often asked to wait or make late trips, so ask how overtime is calculated before you sign. Salary lands in your bank or payroll card under the Wage Protection System; this Gulf News explainer covers what to do if it arrives late. End-of-service gratuity is calculated on the AED 2,000 basic.

- Hiding past traffic fines; employers can check, so be honest.
⚠️ Recruitment safety
Real driver jobs come with a written offer that names the employer, the salary and the visa type. If an agent asks for money to "confirm" a seat, or will not show the offer letter, walk away and report it. Check the company name on official channels before you pay anything.
