A welder's CV is judged on three things before anything else: which process you weld with, which position you are qualified in, and on what material. A recruiter in Chennai or Lucknow holding a demand letter for "Pipe Welder 6G β SMAW" will skip every CV that just says "Welder, 8 years". The work may be excellent, but the agent cannot see it.
This guide is for welders from India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh who want work on Gulf construction sites, shipyards, oil and gas plants and fabrication shops in 2026. It covers the exact titles employers use, what a strong welder CV looks like line by line, the qualification tests you will face, the Saudi skill exam, and real pay from welder vacancies that are open on Resume Arab today.
Process, position, material: the three words that decide your CV
Every Gulf welding vacancy is written in a short code. Learn to read it and write your CV in the same language.
- Process β SMAW (stick or arc), GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG/MAG), FCAW (flux-cored). Many demand letters say "TIG and Arc" because pipe root runs are done with TIG and filling and capping with arc.
- Position β 1G to 4G for plate, 5G and 6G for pipe. 6G means the pipe is fixed at a 45-degree angle and you weld all the way round. A pass in 6G is accepted for all positions under ASME Section IX, which is why it is the most asked-for qualification on Gulf pipe jobs (MaterialWelding guide to the 6G test).
- Material β carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, aluminium, duplex. "Alloy Welder" in a circular usually means chrome-moly or stainless pipe in a plant, and it pays more than carbon steel structure work.
Put all three right under your name. Example: Pipe Welder β 6G, GTAW + SMAW, Carbon & Stainless Steel. An agent reading that one line already knows which demand letter you fit.
Welder job titles used in Gulf demand letters
Pick the one that matches your real work, and keep a second CV if you have done two very different jobs:
- Structural Welder β beams, columns, steel structures and platforms, usually fillet and plate welding in 2G, 3G and 4G.
- Pipe Welder β process piping, water and fire-fighting lines, plant pipework; 5G or 6G is expected.
- TIG Welder / TIG and Arc Welder β stainless and alloy pipe, root passes, food and pharma plants.
- Alloy Welder β chrome-moly, stainless and other alloy pipe in refineries and power plants.
- Downhill Welder β cross-country pipelines welded in the vertical-down direction with cellulose electrodes; a specialist skill with its own premium.
- Fabricator Welder / Welder cum Fabricator β workshop fabrication, cutting, fit-up and welding from drawings.
- Welding Foreman β runs a welding crew, checks fit-up, controls consumables and coordinates with QC.
What a Gulf welder CV should contain, top to bottom
Two pages is enough. Gulf agents read on their phones, so avoid tables with tiny text, coloured boxes and fancy fonts.
- Name, trade line, WhatsApp with country code, email, city.
- Passport block β number, issue and expiry dates, place of issue, date of birth, nationality, and ECR or ECNR for Indian passports. Gulf employers expect this; it is not optional like it is in Europe.
- Summary in three lines β total years, Gulf years, processes, best position, materials, and the type of projects.
- Qualification records β each welder qualification test you passed: code (ASME IX, AWS D1.1, API 1104), process, position, material, pipe diameter and thickness range, test date and who witnessed it (third-party inspector or client).
- Work history, newest first β company, country, project name, months, and four to six lines of what you welded.
- Skills list β short, true keywords.
- Education β ITI welder trade, NCVT or SCVT, any diploma, safety courses.
A neat photo on a plain background is normal on a Gulf CV.
Lines that make agents call back
Numbers and inspection results are what make a welding CV believable. Use these as patterns, then write your own facts:
- Welded 2 to 12 inch carbon steel process piping in 6G with GTAW root and SMAW fill and cap at a gas processing plant.
- Maintained a weld repair rate below 2% on radiography over 14 months, as per the QC department's weld map.
- Completed 450+ inch-dia of stainless steel pipe welding for a desalination project with TIG, including purging and back-gas control.
- Fabricated and welded structural steel for a 3-storey pipe rack from shop drawings, including fit-up checks with the supervisor.
- Prepared joints by grinding and bevelling, checked root gap and alignment, and controlled preheat and interpass temperature on alloy steel.
- Worked under hot-work permits with a fire watch, using full PPE and fume extraction, with no recordable injury.
"Repair rate", "inch-dia" and "radiography" are the words a QC manager uses. If you know your numbers, write them.
Qualification tests: what Gulf employers actually check
Most welders are tested twice: once in India by the agent or the client, and again on arrival before they are allowed on the job. The test coupon is cut, bent or X-rayed, and if it fails, the visa offer can be cancelled.
- Pipe jobs usually follow ASME Section IX for plant piping and API 1104 for pipelines.
- Structural jobs often follow AWS D1.1.
- Many oil and gas clients ask for a test witnessed by a third-party inspection company.
Write each passed test as a separate line, with the code and range. A line like "ASME IX β 6G β GTAW/SMAW β CS β 2 in to 8 in β March 2026 β third-party witnessed" tells the agent you can pass again. Never write a test you did not pass: the coupon will show the truth in one day.
Saudi Arabia: the SVP skill exam for welders
Welding is one of the trades in Saudi Arabia's Skill Verification Program, run with the testing company Takamol. Indian candidates take a theory and practical exam at approved centres before the work visa for listed trades (Gulf News explainer). India was the second country to join the programme (Arab News). Guides on the 2026 rules put the test fee at around USD 50 and say the certificate is checked through Qiwa before the visa is issued; confirm the current fee and trade list with your agent before you book.
On the CV, add a line such as "SVP β Welder β passed β 2026", using the same trade name as the certificate. If you have not taken it yet, write "Ready for SVP test". Last checked: October 2026.
Live welder salaries on Resume Arab
These are real offers from employer circulars, posted on Resume Arab in October 2026:
| Vacancy | Employer | Country | Monthly salary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alloy Welder | Al-Sofi Group | Saudi Arabia | SAR 3,000 β 3,100 |
| Pipe Welder (SMAW/ARC) | MNG β Dubai Metro Project | UAE | AED 2,200 β 2,600 |
| Downhill Welder | HEISCO Kuwait | Kuwait | KWD 200 β 210 |
| TIG and Arc Welder | HEISCO Kuwait | Kuwait | KWD 175 β 185 |
| Structural Welder | Galfar Qatar | Qatar | QAR 1,050 β 1,500 |
The pattern is clear: specialist work (alloy, downhill, pipe) pays more than general structural welding. If you have alloy or pipe experience, it must be in the first three lines of your CV. Mistakes that sink welder CVs
- No process or position. "Welder β 10 years" gives the agent nothing to match.
- Claiming 6G without a test record. If you have only welded 6G on site but never passed a coupon, write "6G site experience, ready for test".
- Mixing trades. "Welder cum fitter cum rigger" reads like a helper's CV.
- Missing project names. "Worked in Saudi" is weak. "Welder, refinery expansion project, Jubail, 2022β2024" is strong.
- No safety line. Hot work is high-risk; a short line about permits and fire watch shows you are site-ready.
FAQ
Which welding position is best to show on a Gulf CV?
6G on pipe is the most valued because a 6G pass covers all positions under ASME Section IX. If you have it, put it in your title line. If you have only plate positions, show the highest one you passed, such as 3G or 4G.
Do welders need the Saudi SVP test?
Welding is on the Saudi Skill Verification list, so Indian welders applying for a Saudi work visa in a listed trade have to pass it first. Ask your agent to confirm the exact trade name before booking.
How much does a welder earn in Kuwait and Qatar?
In October 2026 vacancies on Resume Arab, a TIG and arc welder in Kuwait was offered KWD 175β185 a month and a downhill welder KWD 200β210, while a structural welder in Qatar was offered QAR 1,050β1,500.
Should I mention my welding test certificates?
Yes. List each passed test with the code, process, position, material and date. It is the strongest proof on a welder's CV.
