Heavy drivers keep UAE projects moving. They bring workers to site in buses at dawn, haul sand and aggregate in tippers, deliver steel on trailers and bring everyone back at night. Most Indian, Pakistani and Nepali heavy drivers already have years on the road at home, but the UAE adds its own rules: a local licence, strict traffic enforcement and long shifts in serious heat. This guide uses a real September 2026 Abu Dhabi circular to show the pay and explains how to get, keep and present a UAE heavy licence.
Pay on the Abu Dhabi circular

The engineering company recruiting bus and truck drivers offered:
- AED 2,000 basic + AED 500 other allowance = AED 2,500 a month
- Free food, accommodation and transport
- 9-hour day including a 1-hour break, 6 days a week
At about ₹23 to the dirham, that is roughly ₹57,500 a month with no rent or food to pay. TrucksBuses.com's 2026 data puts mid-career truck drivers in India (3–9 years) at about ₹25,000–35,000 a month.

Getting a UAE heavy licence
This is the step most new drivers underestimate. The UAE government portal sets the minimum age at 20 for heavy vehicles and 21 for buses, with separate categories for each. In Abu Dhabi, driver licensing moved from the police to the Integrated Transport Centre. Guides such as Bayut's Abu Dhabi licence guide describe the normal route for new applicants: open a driving file, pass an eye test, take lessons, then clear theory, yard and road tests. Some foreign licences can be exchanged; many cannot, and heavy licences are rarely exchanged directly. That is why this employer asked for an existing UAE licence.
If you do not have one yet, look for employers who sponsor the licence process and ask in writing who pays the fees and how long you will work as a helper or light driver while you train.
Bus driver vs. truck driver
The circular covered both, but the daily job is different:
- Staff bus drivers run fixed routes between labour camps and sites, usually very early and late. Punctuality, passenger safety and a clean bus matter most.
- Truck and tipper drivers move materials between quarries, batching plants and sites. Load securing, weighbridge rules and careful reversing on site matter most.

Keeping your licence clean
UAE traffic enforcement is camera-based and strict. Speeding, lane discipline, seat belts and phone use while driving all carry fines and black points, and too many points can lead to a suspended licence, which means no work. Company drivers are also checked on tachograph or GPS reports. A clean record is one of the strongest things you can show a new employer.
Driving in UAE summer heat
Cabs get extremely hot, and tyre and brake checks matter more when road temperatures climb. Before every trip, check tyre pressure and tread, brake air pressure, lights and coolant level, and keep water in the cab. Bus drivers should run the air conditioning before workers board. Many companies log these pre-trip checks; doing them properly protects you if anything goes wrong on the road.
Interview questions heavy drivers get
- "What do you check before starting a loaded tipper?"
- "How do you reverse on a busy site?" Mention the banksman (signaller) and never reversing blind.
- "What would you do if your bus breaks down on the highway?" Hazard lights, warning triangle, move passengers to safety, call the supervisor.
Pay and gratuity
Private-sector wages in the UAE are paid through the Wage Protection System, which Gulf News explains here. Gratuity is calculated on basic pay, so on this offer it is based on AED 2,000. Ask how overtime is paid when trips run late.
