Gulf Driver Interview Questions 2026–27 — With Sample Answers

Gulf Driver Interview Questions 2026–27 — With Sample Answers

Driver interviews for Gulf jobs are short and practical. The recruiter or employer wants to know three things quickly: can you legally drive the vehicle, how much real driving have you done, and will you be safe on Gulf roads. This guide covers the questions you are most likely to hear in 2026–27 and how to answer them well.

The 4 questions almost every Gulf driver is asked

These come straight from Resume Arab's Interview Questions tool (Driver category):

1. "Do you have a valid international or Gulf driving licence?"

Good answer: state exactly what you hold. "I have an Indian heavy vehicle licence since 2018, valid till 2032. I do not have a Gulf licence yet, but I am ready to take the local test."

Never claim a licence you do not have — it will be checked, and the local test will expose it.

2. "How many years of driving experience do you have?"

Good answer: give years and type of driving. "Six years — four years driving a 10-wheeler truck between Gujarat and Maharashtra, and two years as a company car driver."

3. "Have you driven manual transmission vehicles?"

Good answer: be honest about manual and automatic. Many heavy vehicles and older light vehicles are manual; many company cars are automatic. "Yes, I have driven manual trucks for four years and automatic cars for two."

4. "Are you familiar with GPS navigation?"

Good answer: mention apps and real use. "Yes, I use Google Maps daily for delivery routes and can follow a route sent on WhatsApp." Gulf cities are large and addresses are often given as map pins, so this matters.

Other questions you should prepare for

  • "What vehicle did you drive in your last job, and what did it carry?"
  • "Have you had any accidents or traffic fines?" — answer honestly and briefly
  • "How do you check a vehicle before starting a trip?" — tyres, lights, brakes, oil, water, mirrors
  • "How do you handle long hours and heat?" — rest breaks, water, never driving when sleepy
  • "Can you load and unload goods?" — common for delivery drivers

Answering the tricky ones

"Why did you leave your last driving job?" Keep it short and positive: "The contract finished" or "I want to earn more for my family and gain Gulf experience." Never criticise a past employer.

"Have you ever had an accident?" If yes, say what happened in one sentence and what you learned: "A minor reversing scrape in 2022; since then I always use a banksman when reversing on site." Honesty here is checked against records more often than candidates think.

"Can you work night shifts or long trips?" Say yes only if you mean it, and mention how you manage rest: "Yes, I sleep properly before night duty and stop for a break every two hours on long trips."

"What would you do if the vehicle breaks down?" Hazard lights, move to the hard shoulder if safe, warning triangle, passengers or cargo to safety, then call the supervisor and wait for instructions.

Questions to ask the interviewer

Ending with one or two good questions makes you look serious:

  • "Which vehicle will I drive, and what are the usual routes?"
  • "Will the company support my local licence, and who pays for lessons?"
  • "What are the working hours and the weekly day off?"
  • "Is accommodation and transport provided?"

Write the answers down after the interview, and check they appear in the written offer.

What employers check in a driver CV

  • Licence type, number class, issue and expiry dates
  • Years of experience by vehicle type (light vehicle, bus, truck, trailer)
  • Routes or areas driven (city delivery, highway, long-distance)
  • Clean driving record
  • Any Gulf licence or test attempts

Licence rules recruiters will ask about

Recruiters ask about licences first because the rules are strict:

  • Minimum ages. In the UAE, the government portal sets higher minimum ages for heavy vehicles (20) and buses (21) than for cars. Expect similar category rules elsewhere in the Gulf.
  • Who issues it. In Abu Dhabi, licensing moved from the police to the Integrated Transport Centre. Knowing this kind of detail shows you have done your homework.
  • Conversion vs. test. Some nationalities can exchange their home licence; most South Asian drivers must take lessons and pass theory, yard and road tests. Guides such as Bayut's Abu Dhabi licence walkthrough explain the stages and typical costs.

A strong interview answer: "I hold an Indian LMV and heavy licence. I know I will need to pass the local tests, and I am ready to start lessons as soon as my residence visa is issued."

Heat and long hours: what to say

Interviewers often ask how you handle summer. In the UAE, outdoor work in direct sun is banned from 12:30 to 3:00 pm between 15 June and 15 September, as What's On reported for 2026, and Kuwait has its own longer summer ban. Drivers are often outdoors loading and waiting, so say how you stay safe: water in the cab, breaks in the shade, checking tyres and coolant before every trip, and never driving when sleepy.

Driving test tips for the Gulf

Most new arrivals must pass the local driving test even with years of experience at home. Practise:

  • Lane discipline and using indicators every time
  • Roundabouts and right-of-way rules
  • Speed limits (strictly enforced by cameras)
  • Seat belt for every passenger

FAQ

Can I drive in the Gulf with my Indian licence?

For a driving job, employers usually need you to get the local licence. Some countries allow licence conversion for certain nationalities and licence types — your employer will tell you the process.

Is a heavy licence better than a light one?

Heavy vehicle drivers often earn more, but the local heavy-licence test is stricter.

What should I wear to a driver interview?

Clean, simple clothes and closed shoes. Bring your licence and copies.

Do Gulf employers check traffic fines?

Often, yes, especially for drivers who already worked in the Gulf. Be honest about past fines.
