High voltage work is one of the few trade jobs in Qatar where employers ask for proof before they ask for anything else. A recruiter filling a substation maintenance vacancy wants to see three things on the first page of your CV: the voltage levels you have worked on, the authorisation that allowed you to switch and isolate, and how many of your years were spent in the Gulf. If those three are buried on page two, the CV is skipped.
This guide is built around a real requirement. A Qatar employer's recruitment circular dated August 2026 asked for High Voltage Technicians with these conditions:
- Salary: QAR 2,000 – 2,500 per month, plus free food, accommodation and transport
- Experience: maintenance of 11kV / 33kV and above substations and transformers
- Qualification: Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
- A High Voltage Authorisation or Competency Certificate
- 5 years of GCC experience, mandatory
- Age 22 to 42
Every section below explains how to show each of these on your CV, honestly and clearly. For the full salary comparison with India, read our high voltage technician salary guide for Qatar.
Put the voltage and the equipment in your title line
Do not write "Electrical Technician" alone. Use a title line that answers the recruiter's first question:
High Voltage Technician – 11kV / 33kV Substations & Transformers – 7 years (5 in GCC)
Below it, a three-line summary: the type of network (utility, oil and gas, industrial plant, district cooling), the main equipment (switchgear, RMUs, power transformers, protection relays), and the country where you did most of the work.
How to write HV experience as bullet points
Recruiters for HV roles are often engineers. They know the work, so vague lines do not impress them. Write what you did, on what equipment, at what voltage, and with what result:
- Carried out preventive maintenance on 11kV and 33kV switchgear and ring main units across 18 secondary substations, following the utility's maintenance schedule.
- Performed insulation resistance, contact resistance and transformer turns ratio tests, and recorded results for the commissioning engineer.
- Assisted in transformer oil sampling and filtration on 33/11kV power transformers during planned shutdowns.
- Prepared isolation and earthing for planned outages under the switching programme, as a holder of HV authorisation at the employer's level.
- Supported protection relay testing and breaker timing tests with the testing team before energisation.
- Attended fault calls on cable failures, located faults with the cable fault team and supervised jointing crews on 11kV cable repairs.
If you hold an authorisation, write the level and the issuer exactly as on the card, for example "Authorised Person – HV switching, issued by [employer/utility], valid till [month year]". Never upgrade the level on your CV. HV employers verify these with the issuing company, and a false claim ends the process at once.
Your authorisation and certificates section
High voltage authorisations are issued by the employer or utility that controls the network, under a written safe system of work. The idea is the same as the UK's well-known guidance on safe working on electrical systems (HSE – Electricity at work, HSG85): only trained, competent and authorised people may switch, isolate and earth HV equipment. That is why a Qatar employer asks for the certificate, and why it must be on your CV.
List, in this order:
- HV authorisation or competency certificate – level, issuer, validity
- Diploma or degree – institute, year
- Safety training – permit to work, confined space, first aid, working at height
- Any equipment-maker training on switchgear or relays
- Driving licence, if you hold a GCC licence
In Qatar, the national electricity and water utility is Kahramaa (Kahramaa). If you have worked on projects connected to Kahramaa's network or approved by it, say so, because it tells the recruiter you know local practice.
Showing "5 years GCC experience" the right way
When a circular says GCC experience is mandatory, the recruiter counts your Gulf years from your CV dates. Make this easy:
- Write the country next to every job: "Al Khor, Qatar" or "Jubail, Saudi Arabia", not only the company name.
- Use month and year for start and end dates. "2019 – 2024" can mean three years or five.
- Add one line under your summary: "GCC experience: 5 years 4 months (Qatar 3 yrs, Saudi Arabia 2 yrs 4 months)."
- Keep your experience letters and, where possible, your old residence permit copies ready. Agents often ask for them before the client interview.
If you have less than five years in the Gulf, do not stretch the dates. Apply to vacancies where GCC experience is "preferred" rather than "mandatory", and use your Indian utility or plant experience as your strength.
Qatar visa steps after you are selected
Qatar runs Qatar Visa Centres (QVC) in India, so much of the visa process happens before you fly. The centres opened in seven cities – New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kochi – and at the centre you sign your employment contract digitally, give fingerprints and biometrics, and do your medical test (Gulf Times). Your employer starts the process with Qatar's Ministry of Interior, and you book the QVC appointment with the visa reference number (The Peninsula).
Read the contract carefully at the QVC. The salary, food, accommodation and transport should match what was offered, for example the QAR 2,000 – 2,500 package in the circular above.
If your passport is ECR, your registered agent must also complete emigration clearance on eMigrate before you travel (MEA – Emigration Clearance System). Never pay an agent who is not registered on eMigrate.
Mistakes that cost HV technicians the job
- Writing "HT/LT work" with no voltage. Write 11kV, 33kV, 66kV or 132kV, whichever is true.
- Mixing building wiring with HV work. If most of your work was building wiring, apply as a building electrician instead, using our electrician CV guide. HV recruiters can tell in the first question.
- No mention of safety. HV employers want to see permit to work, isolation, earthing and lock-out. Put at least one safety line in every job.
- Expired authorisation shown as valid. Write the real validity date. An expired card can often be renewed; a false date cannot be fixed.
- Age left out when the circular has a limit. If the vacancy says 22 to 42, your date of birth must be on the CV so the agent can check quickly.
Interview questions you should prepare for
HV interviews are technical. Expect questions like:
- Explain the steps to isolate and earth an 11kV feeder before work.
- What tests do you do on a transformer before energising it?
- What does a Buchholz relay do, and what would you check after it trips?
- How do you use an insulation resistance tester on HV cable, and what values worry you?
- Tell us about a fault you found and fixed on a live network.

FAQ
What salary does a high voltage technician get in Qatar?
A Qatar employer's circular from August 2026 offered QAR 2,000 – 2,500 a month plus free food, accommodation and transport for HV technicians with 11kV/33kV substation experience and 5 years in the GCC. Pay varies by employer, project and authorisation level.
Is an HV authorisation certificate compulsory for Qatar jobs?
For switching, isolation and substation maintenance roles, most employers ask for it, and the circular above listed it as a requirement. If you do not hold one, show your HV training and the work you did under an authorised person.
Can I apply without 5 years of GCC experience?
You can apply where GCC experience is "preferred". Where it is "mandatory", agents usually reject CVs that do not meet it, so do not change your dates to fit.
Where do I do my medical and fingerprints for a Qatar work visa?
At a Qatar Visa Centre in India, where you also sign your employment contract, after your employer starts the visa process in Qatar.
