Yes: most Gulf CVs include a professional photo, nationality and date of birth, unlike CVs for the UK or the USA. Gulf employers use these details for practical reasons: work visas are tied to the employer, nationality affects localisation quotas, and some visas have age limits. But not every personal detail helps. This guide explains what to include, why, how to do it well, and what to leave out.
Why Gulf CVs are different from Western CVs
In the UK and USA, recruiters are trained to avoid photos and birth dates to reduce bias. Gulf hiring works differently because of the visa system:
- Visa sponsorship: the employer applies for your work permit and residence visa, so nationality and passport details affect the process from day one.
- Localisation quotas: Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar all run nationalisation programmes. In Saudi Arabia, for example, engineering and procurement roles now carry minimum Saudi percentages, as listed by Gulf Business. Employers need to know whether a candidate counts towards a quota.
- Age and medical rules: some visa categories and recruitment drives set age ranges, which is why many circulars state "age 21β40".
Practitioner guides agree on the norm. The ATS Verification Dubai guide and ResumeVera's UAE photo guide both describe a photo and nationality as expected or common on UAE CVs, while noting it is not a legal requirement.
Country-by-country guide
| Detail | UAE | Saudi Arabia | Qatar | Kuwait / Oman / Bahrain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Photo | Common, expected for most roles | Common | Common | Common |
| Nationality | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Date of birth | Common, often expected | Common | Common | Common |
| Visa / residence status | Yes (visit, residence, transferable) | Yes (Iqama transferable or not) | Yes (QID if in Qatar) | Yes (Civil ID / CPR / resident card) |
| Marital status | Optional | Optional | Optional | Optional |
| Religion | No | No | No | No |
For Gulf nationals, write your nationality and National ID status instead of passport and visa lines; our CV builder switches these fields automatically when you choose a GCC nationality.
Photo rules that look professional
- Passport-style head-and-shoulders photo, face clearly visible.
- Plain light background (white or light grey).
- Business or neat work clothing suited to the job; a technician in a clean uniform is fine.
- Recent (within the last year), good light, no filters or selfies.
- Small size, top corner of page one. Around 3.5 Γ 4.5 cm is the size many guides suggest.
A bad photo hurts more than no photo. If you do not have a good one, leave it out and send it when asked.
Date of birth vs age
Write your date of birth in a clear format such as "12 March 1994". Some candidates write only "Age: 31", which also works but needs updating. Never hide your age if a vacancy states an age range; recruiters will check your passport anyway.
What to leave out
- Religion and caste. Not needed for any job. UAE law prohibits employment discrimination on grounds including religion, race and national origin, as summarised in this Mondaq legal note.
- Father's name, full home address, and passport scans on the CV itself. Share documents only after a real offer or through a trusted portal.
- Height, weight and body descriptions, unless a specific job (for example certain security roles) asks and you choose to share.
- Salary history in detail. Give expectations when asked.
Protect yourself: never send passport copies to unknown numbers on WhatsApp. Our visa checklist tool shows which documents are needed at each stage.
Where these details go on the page
Put a compact personal block under your name:
Nationality: Indian | Date of birth: 12 March 1994 | Visa: UAE residence (transferable) | Notice: 30 days | Driving licence: UAE light vehicle
One line, easy to scan, and the rest of page one stays free for experience. For full layouts, browse our free CV templates or read the Gulf CV templates guide.
Personal block examples by job type
Different jobs need different details in that one line. Use these as patterns:
- Heavy or light driver: Nationality | Date of birth | Licence: GCC heavy (valid until 2028) | Passport valid until 2031 | Available in 2 weeks
- Nurse or pharmacist: Nationality | Date of birth | Licence: DHA / SCFHS status | DataFlow verification completed | Notice: 60 days
- Engineer: Nationality | Date of birth | Visa: Iqama transferable | Saudi Council of Engineers status | Notice: 30 days
- Office or sales role: Nationality | Date of birth | Visa: UAE residence | Languages: English, Hindi, Arabic (basic) | Notice: 30 days
- Fresher from India: Nationality | Date of birth | Passport: ECNR, valid until 2033 | Ready to travel
Licence, passport validity and notice period often decide who gets called first, because they tell the recruiter how fast you can join. Keep them next to your photo and nationality, not hidden at the end.
Special cases
- Applying to multinational head offices in Dubai: some follow global policies and prefer CVs without photos. If the posting says so, follow it.
- Applying through Indian recruitment drives: circulars often list age limits and passport validity. Keep date of birth and passport validity visible.
- Gulf nationals: add your National ID status; passport and visa lines are not needed.
FAQ
Is a photo compulsory on a Gulf CV?
No law requires it, but it is common and many recruiters expect it. Use a professional photo or leave it out; never use a casual selfie.
Should I write my age or date of birth?
Either works. Date of birth is more common in the Gulf and does not need updating each year.
Should I mention my religion on a CV for Saudi Arabia or the UAE?
No. Religion is not relevant to your ability to do the job, and UAE labour law prohibits discrimination on that basis.
Do Gulf nationals need to add passport details?
No. Gulf nationals should show nationality and National ID status instead of passport and visa details.
Should I write ECR or ECNR on my CV?
Indian candidates applying for Gulf jobs often add passport type (ECR or ECNR) because it affects emigration clearance. Our ECR passport guide explains what it means.
