Side Boom Operator Salary in UAE 2026: Pipeline Jobs, Pay, CV Tips

Side Boom Operator Salary in UAE 2026: Pipeline Jobs, Pay, CV Tips

A side boom (also called a pipelayer) is a tracked machine with a boom on one side and a counterweight on the other. Its job is simple to describe and hard to do well: lift long strings of welded pipe and lower them into the trench without bending, scratching the coating or dropping a section. On a pipeline spread, several side booms work together in a line, and one careless operator can stop the whole crew. That is why pipeline contractors in the UAE pay for proven operators. This guide uses a real September 2026 Abu Dhabi circular to explain the money, the skills and the CV that gets you selected.

Salary on the Abu Dhabi circular

Side Boom Operator salary comparison: India vs Abu Dhabi, UAE

  • Total pay: AED 3,000 a month, made up of AED 2,500 basic and AED 500 other allowance.
  • Free food, plus accommodation and transport from the camp to the right-of-way.
  • Hours: 9 a day including a 1-hour break, 6 days a week.
  • India comparison: side boom operators have no separate category on Indian wage portals; the nearest, WageIndicator's crane and hoist operators group, shows roughly ₹19,500–41,500 a month.

AED 3,000 converts to roughly ₹69,000 a month, and because the camp covers food and housing, most of it can be saved or sent home.

Requirements on the circular

  • 3–5 years operating side boom / pipelayer equipment
  • UAE crane or heavy-equipment operator licence
  • Age 45 or under
  • Passport valid 12 months or more
  • GCC-approved medical only
  • Deployment within about seven days of visa issue

A day on a pipeline spread

The work follows a set order. Pipes are strung along the route, welded into long strings, inspected and coated. Then the lowering-in crew arrives: two to five side booms lift the string together, the lead operator follows the foreman's signals, and the string is lowered gently onto padding in the trench. After that come tie-ins and backfill. As an operator you also help with pipe handling at the stringing stage and with lifting for tie-ins.

What matters most is timing with the other machines. If one side boom lifts too fast or too high, the pipe bends and the coating can crack. Good operators watch the string, not just their own hook.

Heat, camps and long shifts

Pipeline spreads are often in the desert, far from the city. During the 2026 summer, the UAE midday outdoor work ban ran from 15 June to 15 September, 12:30 to 3:00 pm, and employers had to provide shade, water and cooling, as Masdar City Free Zone's 2026 employer guide summarises. Expect early starts, a camp routine and long weeks.

Safety points pipeline supervisors check

  • Stay within the load chart for the counterweight position and boom angle. Side booms tip sideways if overloaded.
  • Never travel with a raised load on a slope or soft ground.
  • Keep clear of overhead lines and buried services marked on the drawings.
  • Use slings and cradles that protect the pipe coating.
  • Pre-start checks: winch brakes, cables, tracks and the load indicator.

Mention these in your interview. Supervisors want operators who stop the job when something is wrong.

Understanding your pay slip

Private-sector wages in the UAE go through the Wage Protection System, which Gulf News explains here. Your end-of-service gratuity is based on basic salary: under the UAE labour law it is 21 days' basic pay for each of the first five years, as Middle East Briefing explains. On this offer, that means the AED 2,500 basic, not the AED 3,000 total. For example, after three full years the gratuity would be roughly 63 days of basic pay, a little over AED 5,000. Keep your contract and payslips safe so the calculation is easy to check when you leave.

A side boom CV that gets shortlisted

  • Title: "Side Boom / Pipelayer Operator".
  • Machines: makes and lifting capacities you have operated.
  • Pipe sizes: for example "16 to 48 inch steel pipe, lowering-in crews of 4 machines".
  • Projects: oil, gas or water pipelines, country and length.
  • Licences: UAE or GCC licence, third-party operator card if any.
  • Keywords: pipelayer, side boom, lowering-in, pipe stringing, tie-in, right-of-way, rigging, coating protection.

Recruiters also search Indeed's heavy equipment operator listings using the word "pipelayer", so include both terms. Start from our CV templates and compare other heavy-equipment roles in the crawler crane operator guide.

Common mistakes

  • Listing "heavy equipment operator" without naming the side boom.
  • No pipe sizes or project types, so the recruiter cannot judge your level.
  • Ignoring the basic-versus-allowance split when comparing offers.

⚠️ Recruitment safety

Never pay a fee just because someone promises a job. Verify the employer, get a written offer and contract, and check any recruitment charges through official channels before paying.
