Getting a Saudi work visa from India involves more paperwork than most people expect — and missing one attested document can delay you by weeks. This checklist covers what Indian workers typically need for a Saudi employment visa in 2026–27, in the order you usually need it.
Before the visa: what your employer does
Your Saudi employer first obtains the work visa authorisation (visa number) for your job title and nationality. Make sure the job title on the visa matches your actual trade and your certificates — mismatched titles are one of the most common causes of delay and of problems later with your residence permit (Iqama).
Your document checklist (from India)
- Passport — valid for at least 6 months beyond travel, with blank pages
- Passport-size photographs — white background, recent
- Signed employment contract / offer from the Saudi employer
- Educational and trade certificates, attested — attested in India (State/HRD and the Ministry of External Affairs, MEA) and then by the Saudi mission, where your job requires it
- GCC pre-travel medical — done through Wafid (the platform that replaced GAMCA) at an approved medical centre
- Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) — usually from the Passport Seva system
- Biometrics and visa submission — through the authorised visa centre (Tasheer), which handles application submission, biometric registration and fee payment
- Visa stamping in your passport before travel
- Emigration Clearance (eMigrate) — if your passport is ECR (Emigration Check Required). ECNR passport holders do not need it.

The Wafid medical in 2026
The GCC pre-employment medical that many workers still call "GAMCA" now runs through Wafid. According to Fragomen, only GCC-approved medical centres may carry out Wafid examinations, and the results are uploaded directly to the electronic platform before visa processing can continue. A May 2026 report from MRRORS adds that the Gulf Health Council updated the programme's rules and created a grievance committee for disputed results.
What this means for you:
- Book only through Wafid, never through an agent's "private" medical centre.
- Results are electronic. Your agent cannot "fix" an unfit result; if you believe a result is wrong, ask about the grievance route.
- Plan the timing. Medical results have a limited validity period, so do not take the medical months before your visa is ready.
If your passport is ECR
Saudi Arabia is one of the ECR countries listed by India's Ministry of External Affairs, so an ECR passport holder going for work needs eMigrate clearance before flying. The clearance comes with the mandatory Pravasi Bharatiya Bima Yojana policy, which the MEA's PBBY page describes as ₹10 lakh accident and disability cover for a one-time premium of ₹275 (two years) or ₹375 (three years). Our ECR and emigration clearance guide explains the steps.
After you land in Saudi Arabia
- A local medical test and biometrics
- Your employer converts the entry visa into an Iqama (residence permit)
- Your employment contract is registered on the official platform, and salary is paid through the wage-protection system
Timeline: plan 4–8 weeks
Attestation, medical results and visa stamping each take time. Most delays come from:
- Incomplete attestation chains
- Job title on the visa not matching certificates
- Medical or PCC appointments booked late
- Wrong or blurred document scans
A simple week-by-week plan
This is a typical order for a worker with an offer in hand. Your employer or agent may change it, but it shows what can run in parallel:
- Week 1: check passport validity and ECR/ECNR status; apply for the Police Clearance Certificate; start certificate attestation if your job needs it.
- Week 2: receive the visa authorisation details from the employer; book the Wafid medical at an approved centre.
- Week 3: collect the medical result and PCC; submit the visa application and biometrics at the authorised centre.
- Week 4: visa stamped; eMigrate clearance and PBBY insurance if your passport is ECR; book travel only after clearance is confirmed.
- Weeks 5–8: buffer for attestation or appointment delays.
Keep a simple checklist on your phone and tick each item as it is done. When an agent says "everything is ready", ask to see each document.
Attestation: the step that causes most delays
For jobs where your qualification matters (technicians, engineers, nurses, accountants), certificates usually need a chain of stamps: the issuing board or university, then the state authority, then the Ministry of External Affairs (apostille or attestation), and then the Saudi side as required. Start early, use the MEA's authorised outsourced centres rather than unknown middlemen, and keep colour scans of every stamped page. A missing stamp can block your Iqama or professional registration after you arrive.
Protect yourself
- Use only a recruitment agent registered on eMigrate.
- Never hand over your original passport without a written receipt.
- Get the offer letter in writing before paying for medicals or attestation.
- Keep scanned copies of everything on your phone and email.
FAQ

Do I need emigration clearance for Saudi Arabia?
Only if your passport is ECR and you are going for employment. Saudi Arabia is one of the ECR countries.
How long is the medical valid?
Validity can change — check the date on your Wafid result and confirm with your agent before booking travel.
