A mechanical engineer CV for Saudi Arabia has to do two jobs at once: show your technical depth, and show the employer that hiring you will not create a compliance problem. Since 30 June 2026, private companies with five or more engineers must keep 30% of engineering roles Saudi, and every engineer must be accredited by the Saudi Council of Engineers (SCE). A CV that answers "Can this person get accredited quickly?" on page one gets shortlisted faster.
This guide shows the exact format, the bullet points that work, the keywords Saudi recruiters search for, and the mistakes that get mechanical engineers rejected.
What changed for engineers in Saudi Arabia in 2026
The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (HRSD) announced on 8 July 2026 that it had started enforcing a 30% Saudization rate in 46 engineering professions in the private sector, effective 30 June 2026, together with the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing. You can read the ministry's own notice on the HRSD news page. Law-firm summaries from EIG Law and Envoy Global add that the rule applies to establishments with five or more workers in the covered professions and that SCE accreditation is required.
What this means for you as an expat mechanical engineer:
- Roles still exist, but each one is more competitive. 70% of engineering seats can still be filled by non-Saudis, so companies hire expats for experience they cannot find locally.
- Experience must be obvious. Employers will spend an expat seat on someone who brings a clear specialism: HVAC design, rotating equipment, piping stress, plant maintenance or fire protection.
- Accreditation readiness matters. Saudi immigration practice has long required foreign engineers to register with the SCE before or soon after arrival. BAL's immigration alert describes the online registration step before the work visa. Put your degree, university and accreditation status where a recruiter can see it in five seconds.
The right CV format for a mechanical engineer in Saudi Arabia
Saudi employers and recruiters are used to a slightly longer, detailed CV. Two pages is normal for 3–10 years of experience; three pages is acceptable for senior engineers with project lists.
Page 1, top block (in this order):
- Full name and title line, for example: Mechanical Engineer, HVAC and Plumbing Design, 7 Years (4 in KSA)
- Phone with country code, WhatsApp, email, current city
- Nationality, date of birth, current visa or Iqama status (transferable or not), notice period
- Degree: B.E./B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering, university, year
- SCE status: "SCE membership no. ____" or "Eligible for SCE accreditation; degree documents attested"
Then: a three-line professional summary, core skills, work experience (newest first), projects, certifications, software, languages.
Keep it in Word or a text-based PDF. Avoid tables and two-column templates for the experience section, because many Saudi companies run CVs through applicant tracking systems that read single-column text better.
Professional summary examples
A strong summary names your specialism, your sector and a result. Three examples you can adapt:
Mechanical engineer with 7 years in MEP design and site execution, including 4 years on Saudi commercial towers. Designed chilled-water and ventilation systems for buildings up to 32 floors and cut design revisions by coordinating clashes in Revit before IFC.
Maintenance engineer with 9 years in rotating equipment (pumps, compressors, gearboxes) at petrochemical and water plants. Led shutdown teams of 25 and raised pump mean time between failures from 11 to 17 months.
Fire protection engineer with 5 years designing sprinkler, foam and fire-water networks to NFPA 13/20, with Civil Defence submissions in Riyadh and Dammam.
Only use numbers you can defend in an interview. Saudi interviewers often ask, "How did you measure that?"
Work experience bullet points that get shortlisted
Write 4–7 bullets per job. Start each with a verb, name the system, and end with a number. Adapt these to your real work:
- Designed HVAC systems (VRF, chilled water, AHUs, FCUs) for a 28,000 m² hospital annex, including heat-load calculations in HAP and duct sizing to ASHRAE standards.
- Prepared shop drawings and coordinated MEP clashes in Revit and Navisworks, closing 340+ clashes before installation.
- Supervised installation and testing of 1,200 tons of chillers, cooling towers and pumps; completed testing and commissioning with zero rework items at handover.
- Reviewed material submittals and method statements against project specifications and consultant comments, keeping approval turnaround under 7 days.
- Planned preventive maintenance in SAP PM for 180 rotating assets; reduced unplanned downtime by 22% over 12 months.
- Led root-cause analysis on repeated mechanical seal failures and changed the flushing plan, saving roughly 40 seal replacements a year.
- Managed subcontractor teams of up to 45 technicians, with daily safety briefings and permit-to-work compliance.
- Prepared as-built drawings, O&M manuals and handover dossiers for client and consultant sign-off.
If you worked on Saudi giga-projects, name the client or project type honestly ("hotel package within a Red Sea development") without claiming roles you did not hold.
Skills and keywords Saudi recruiters search for
Group your skills so both people and software can scan them:
- Design: HVAC load calculation, duct and pipe sizing, plumbing and drainage, fire fighting (NFPA), pump selection
- Codes and standards: ASHRAE, SMACNA, NFPA, ASME B31.3, Saudi Building Code (SBC)
- Software: AutoCAD, Revit MEP, Navisworks, HAP/Trace 700, Elite Fire, Caesar II (piping), SAP PM or Maximo
- Site and maintenance: testing and commissioning, shutdown planning, vibration analysis, alignment, root-cause analysis
- Management: method statements, material submittals, subcontractor coordination, QA/QC inspection requests (IRs)
Mention the Saudi Building Code only if you actually used it. Recruiters test keywords in interviews.
Gulf country notes if you also apply outside Saudi Arabia
Most mechanical engineers apply to two or three GCC countries at the same time. Adjust one line per country:
- Saudi Arabia: SCE accreditation and Saudization context, as above.
- Qatar: engineers on work permits for engineering jobs must register with the Ministry of Municipality and pass its exam, under rules summarised by PwC Middle East. Add "Ready for Qatar engineer registration exam" if you have prepared.
- UAE: employers look for UAE project experience and authority approvals (DEWA, Dubai Municipality, Civil Defence).
Our civil engineer CV guide covers the UAE and Saudi registration angle for civil roles if you work across both disciplines.
Salary context (and why you should not put it on the CV)
Do not write expected salary on the CV itself; discuss it after shortlisting. Salaries for expat mechanical engineers in Saudi Arabia depend heavily on discipline, project type and whether housing and transport are paid separately. One public data point: the engineering Saudization decision sets a minimum monthly salary of SAR 8,000 for a Saudi engineer to count towards the quota, according to Gulf Business. That is a rule for Saudi nationals, not a promise for expats, but it shows the floor employers now benchmark against. Use our salary check tool to compare packages by country before an interview.
Common mistakes on mechanical engineer CVs
- Listing every software ever touched. Keep tools you can use in a test today.
- Hiding the degree. Saudi accreditation starts with the degree; put it on page one.
- No numbers. "Responsible for HVAC" says nothing; "Designed 450 TR chilled-water plant" says a lot.
- Unclear visa status. If your Iqama is transferable, say so; it can shorten hiring by weeks.
- Old photos and personal details overload. A professional photo is common in the Gulf, but marital status and religion are not needed.
Interview and technical test tips
Expect three rounds: HR screening, a technical interview with a senior engineer, and sometimes a design or calculation test. Common questions:
- Walk us through a heat-load calculation for an office floor.
- How do you select a pump? What is NPSH and why does it matter?
- How did you handle a clash between ductwork and structure on site?
- What causes repeated bearing failure, and how did you fix it?
Bring two or three drawings or reports you prepared (with client names removed if confidential). For more practice questions, use our interview questions tool.
FAQ
Do I need SCE accreditation before applying for jobs in Saudi Arabia?
You can apply without it, but your employer will need you to be accredited by the Saudi Council of Engineers to work as an engineer. Show your degree details and accreditation readiness clearly so recruiters know the process will be smooth.
Does the 30% Saudization rule stop expats from getting engineering jobs?
No. It requires covered companies to keep at least 30% of engineering roles Saudi. The remaining roles can be filled by expats, but competition is higher, so a focused, evidence-based CV matters more.
How long should a mechanical engineer CV be for Saudi jobs?
Two pages for most engineers, up to three for senior engineers with long project lists. Keep the most important information, including degree and accreditation status, on page one.
Should I include a photo on my Saudi CV?
A professional passport-style photo is common and accepted in Saudi Arabia. Use a plain background and business clothing. It is not a substitute for strong experience.
Which certifications help a mechanical engineer in the Gulf?
It depends on your track: PMP for project roles, LEED or energy auditing for building services, and vibration analysis or reliability certificates for maintenance roles. Only list certificates you have completed.
