Forklift Operator Salary in the Gulf 2026–27: 6 Countries Compared

Forklift operators are among the better-paid blue-collar roles in Gulf warehouses, ports and factories — but only if you have the right licence for the country. This guide compares forklift operator salaries across all six Gulf countries for 2026–27 and explains the licence rules that decide whether you actually get that pay.

Compared with a warehouse helper in the same data (for example SAR 900–1,400 in Saudi Arabia), a licensed forklift operator's range is roughly double. That gap is the reason many helpers aim to get a forklift licence.

The licence question (UAE example)

In the UAE, forklift operation needs a forklift licence issued through the traffic authority — in Dubai, training and tests run through RTA-approved driving institutes, with light and heavy forklift categories. Common requirements reported by training providers:

  • Minimum age of 20
  • A valid UAE residence visa and Emirates ID
  • An eye test from an approved optical shop
  • Theory classes, practical training and the final test

Other Gulf countries have their own rules. A forklift certificate from your home country helps you get hired, but most employers will ask you to obtain the local licence after arrival.

What the UAE forklift licence process looks like

Based on the RTA-linked institute pages above, the usual Dubai sequence is:

  1. Eye test at an RTA-authorised optical centre (the ETDI page specifies a centre accredited by the Dubai Health Authority).
  2. Open a file through the RTA system using your Emirates ID, and choose the light or heavy forklift category.
  3. Sign the training contract with the institute and receive a learning permit.
  4. Theory lessons on safety rules, load charts and signals, using the RTA handbook.
  5. Practical training in the yard: picking, stacking, reversing and parking.
  6. Final test with an examiner. Pass, and the forklift category is added to your licence.

Driving schools quote total fees in the low thousands of dirhams, and they vary by institute and by how many lessons you need. Many employers pay for the licence for staff they have already hired, so ask before you pay yourself.

What decides where you fall in the range

  • Local licence in hand — the biggest factor
  • Years of experience, especially with reach trucks or heavy forklifts
  • Shift pattern — night and long shifts often carry extra pay
  • Industry — ports, cold storage and large logistics hubs usually pay more than small stores
  • Safety record — employers value operators with no incidents

What to put on a forklift operator CV

  • Forklift types you have used (counterbalance, reach truck, heavy forklift) and load capacity
  • Years of experience and the kind of warehouse (FMCG, cold storage, port, construction materials)
  • Any certificate, with issuing body and year
  • Safety: daily checks, load limits, pallet stacking height
  • Driving licence details (home country and any Gulf licence)

From helper to operator: a realistic path

  1. Start as a warehouse helper and learn loading, stacking and safety rules.
  2. Ask your supervisor to let you train alongside an operator — many warehouses allow this.
  3. Get the local licence (in the UAE, through an approved driving institute) once you have a residence visa.
  4. Update your CV and job title only after you hold the licence — never claim it before.
  5. Apply internally first. Employers often promote their own helpers because they already know the site.

Safety points employers check in interviews

  • Daily pre-use inspection (brakes, horn, forks, hydraulics, tyres)
  • Never lifting above the rated capacity
  • Keeping forks low while moving and watching for pedestrians
  • Correct pallet stacking and racking heights
  • Parking with forks lowered and the key removed

Mention these naturally in your interview answers — they show you are a safe operator, which matters more to Gulf employers than speed.

Reading the handbook pays off

The RTA handbook is free to read, and examiners take questions from it. Learn the load chart and the "load centre" idea (the further the load sits from the mast, the less the truck can safely lift), the stability triangle, and the rule that you travel with the load low and tilted back. Operators who can explain why they do something, not just what they do, pass faster and get hired more often.
