An accountant's CV for the Gulf is judged in two places: by the applicant tracking system (ATS) that scans it first, and by a finance manager who wants to see Gulf tax, Gulf software and clean month-end numbers. This guide gives you the exact structure, real bullet points you can adapt, and the Gulf-specific details most CVs from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, the Philippines and Sri Lanka leave out.
What a Gulf accountant actually does
Most accountant openings in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain sit in trading companies, contracting firms, hotels, clinics and free-zone businesses. The day-to-day work is usually:
- Day-to-day bookkeeping, journal entries and the general ledger
- Accounts payable (AP) and accounts receivable (AR), including supplier and customer reconciliations
- Bank reconciliation and petty cash control
- Month-end and year-end closing, trial balance and financial statements
- VAT returns and, in the UAE, corporate tax support
- Payroll inputs and end-of-service (gratuity) provisions
- Supporting external auditors
Your CV should show you have done these tasks, with numbers.
The right CV format
- Length: 1β2 pages. Fresh and junior accountants: 1 page.
- Layout: single column, no tables, no text boxes, no graphics. ATS software reads plain text best.
- File: PDF named like
Firstname_Lastname_Accountant_CV.pdf. - Top section: name, job title ("Accountant β AP/AR, VAT, IFRS"), WhatsApp number with country code, email, current location and nationality.
- Gulf personal details: nationality, visa status (e.g. "Visit visa, available immediately" or "Employment visa, notice 30 days") and, if you have one, a GCC driving licence. A professional photo is still common in Gulf CVs.
Recommended order: Profile β Core skills β Work experience β Education & certifications β Software β Personal details β Languages.
Profile: write it in 3 lines
Accountant with 5 years in trading and contracting companies, including 2 years in the UAE. Handles AP/AR, bank reconciliation, month-end close and UAE VAT returns in Tally and Zoho Books. Looking for an accountant role in Dubai or Sharjah; available on 30 days' notice.
Avoid "hard-working and honest" type lines β every CV says that. Say what you did and where.
Core skills: use the words employers search for
Recruiters search their ATS with exact terms. Include the ones you genuinely have:
- Accounting: General ledger, AP/AR, bank reconciliation, month-end close, fixed assets, inventory costing, cash flow
- Gulf tax: UAE VAT (5%), VAT return filing, UAE Corporate Tax, Saudi ZATCA e-invoicing (Fatoora) β only if you have done it
- Standards: IFRS (for example IFRS 15 revenue, IFRS 16 leases)
- Software: Tally Prime, Zoho Books, QuickBooks, SAP FICO, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, MS Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP)
- Payroll: WPS payroll files, gratuity calculation
Real bullet points you can adapt
Write every bullet as action + scope + result. Replace the numbers with your own true numbers.
Accountant β trading company (UAE)
- Posted 600+ supplier and customer invoices a month in Zoho Books and kept AP/AR ageing under 60 days
- Prepared quarterly UAE VAT returns for 3 years with zero penalties from the tax authority
- Reconciled 4 bank accounts every month and cleared old unmatched items worth AED 85,000
- Closed the books by the 5th working day each month and prepared the trial balance for management
Junior Accountant β contracting company (India)
- Recorded daily purchase, sales and expense entries in Tally Prime for 12 project sites
- Prepared GST working papers and supported the statutory audit team with schedules
- Tracked site petty cash and reduced unsupported expense claims by half within six months
If you have only Indian experience, mention GST work β it shows you already understand VAT-style indirect tax, which is directly useful for UAE VAT.
Gulf-specific details that make the difference
- UAE VAT is 5% and has been in place since 2018. If you have filed VAT returns anywhere, say so clearly.
- UAE Corporate Tax: 9% on taxable profit above AED 375,000, for financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023. Accountants who have prepared corporate-tax working papers are in demand β mention it only if you have.
- Saudi Arabia: ZATCA's e-invoicing (Fatoora) rules affect every invoice. Experience with compliant e-invoicing systems is a plus for Saudi roles.
- Gratuity and payroll: knowing how end-of-service is provided for (in the UAE, 21 days' basic salary per year for the first five years) shows you understand Gulf payroll.
- Qualifications: CA, ACCA, CMA or CPA should be on the first page. Part-qualified? Write it honestly: "ACCA β 9 of 13 papers passed".
Common mistakes on accountant CVs
- Listing software without saying what you did in it
- Writing "handled accounts" instead of the actual tasks (AP, AR, VAT, close)
- No numbers at all β invoice volume, number of bank accounts, days to close
- Putting the qualification at the end of page two
- Fancy two-column templates that ATS software cannot read
Interview: what Gulf employers usually ask
- "Walk me through your month-end closing steps."
- "How do you calculate VAT payable for a quarter?"
- "What is the difference between accrual and provision?"
- "How would you handle an unreconciled bank difference?"
- An Excel test is common β practise pivot tables and lookups.
Keep answers short and practical, and bring your certificates (attested if you are moving from abroad).
Salary context (UAE)
Reported UAE ranges vary a lot by experience and qualification: junior accountants with 1β3 years usually report around AED 4,000β7,000 a month, 3β5 years around AED 7,000β12,000, and qualified accountants (CA/ACCA/CPA) are reported at roughly AED 13,000β27,000 a month in the Michael Page UAE Salary Guide 2026. There is no personal income tax in the UAE.

FAQ
Should an accountant's CV for Dubai include a photo?
It is still common in the Gulf and many employers expect it. Use a plain, professional photo. If an advert asks for no photo, follow the advert.
Is ACCA better than CA for Gulf jobs?
Both are respected. ACCA is very widely recognised in the UAE; Indian CA is well known in Gulf companies with Indian management. What matters most is showing Gulf-relevant work such as VAT and IFRS.
I have no Gulf experience. Will my CV be rejected?
No. Show transferable work: GST/indirect tax, IFRS or Ind AS, ERP software and clear numbers. Many employers hire accountants from abroad.
Should I write my expected salary on the CV?
Usually no β share it when the recruiter asks.
